E.P.P. 029 LONGWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT ENFORCEMENT POLICY & PROCEDURE NUMBER: EPP – 29 SUBJECT: CARE AND CLEANING OF FIREARMS EFFECTIVE: JANUARY 1, 2001 REVISED: AUGUST 1, 2022 ENFORCEMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURE CARE AND CLEANING OF FIREARMS EPP – 29 Page 1 of 2 I. PURPOSE: The purpose of this directive is to ensure that all members service weapons operate safely and properly at all times. II. PROCEDURES: A. Armory Officer shall: 1. Assure that all weapons are properly cleaned and operating efficiently when issued to a member; 2. Field strip and thoroughly service members service weapon; 3. Properly repair any malfunctions of member’s service weapons; 4. Will provide members with replacement while their service weapon is being repaired; 5. Will forward any weapons with serious problems to authorized factory repair representative. B. Member shall: 1. Not make any modifications or additions to the department issued service weapon; 2. Keep the service weapon properly cleaned and ready for inspection at all times; 3. Not remove grips of the service weapon or any other screws on the weapon; ENFORCEMENT POLICY AND PROCEDURE CARE AND CLEANING OF FIREARMS EPP – 29 Page 2 of 2 4. Be allowed to “field strip” the service weapon and magazines according to manufacturers and department instruction for cleaning and inspection; 5. Be sure the slide action is properly lubricated at all times; 6. Wipe down the service weapon daily and inspect for rust, cleanliness and damage; 7. Report any damage to or loss of any parts of the service weapon to the Armory Officer for immediate repair or replacement. C. The semi-auto loading handgun must be kept clean to insure proper function. The slide rails of the frame and slide “must” be kept well lubricated and visibly “wet” with lubrication. The magazines must be routinely stripped, cleaned and thoroughly inspected for cracks, rust, bent lips or any other damage. The weapon and magazines should be lightly protected with a pure silicone spray wiped “into” the surface.
