A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF LONGWOOD,
FLORIDA, ENCOURAGING THE SEMINOLE
COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION TO SUSTAIN
THE CURRENT LEVEL OF TRANSPORTATION
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE PHYSICALLY AND
MENTALLY IMPAIRED INVOLVED IN THE
SEMINOLE WORK OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM
(SWOP).
WHEREAS, the Seminole Work Opportunity Program (SWOP) has provided
employment and quality of life enhancement opportunities to the physically and mentally
impaired residents of Seminole County since 1980; and
WHEREAS, SWOP teaches vocational skills; and provides meaningful
employment to a vulnerable segment of our population overlooked by other assistance
programs; and
WHEREAS, transportation to and from the SWOP training and employment site
is provided by the Seminole County Board of Education funded by grant proceeds
through the Florida Department of Persons with Disabilities; and
WHEREAS, grant proceeds from the Florida Department of Persons with
Disabilities have been reduced in Fiscal Year 2009 by 6.2%; and
WHEREAS, transportation services provided to SWOP will be severely
diminished as a result of reduced State grant proceeds; and
WHEREAS, the reduction in transportation services provided to SWOP by the
Seminole County School Board will create a hardship on, and reduce the earning
potential of persons serviced by SWOP as a result of diminished transportation to and
from the SWOP training and employment site.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF
LONGWOOD, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the City Commission of the City of Longwood hereby calls upon
and encourages the Members of the Seminole County School Board to do everything in
their power to retain the current level of transportation services .provided to the one
hundred and thirty (13.0) persons currently participating in SWOP training and
employment programs.
