PR04-04-06Min MINU7CES ` PARKS AND RECREATIa?N ADVISORY BOARD 175 WEST WARREN AVENUE LONGWOOD, FLORIDA Apri14, 2006 COMMISSION CHAMBERS 7:00 PM Present: Abigail Shoemaker, Chair Bob Driver, Vice Chair Gino Gavoni, Member Elsie Richardson, Member Mary Volkening, Member Kitty White, Member Fran Meli, Recreation Program Manager Linda Goff, Recording Secretary 1. Call to Order. Chair Shoemaker called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes March 7., 2006 Regular Meeting. Vice Chair Driver moved to approve the minutes of March 7, 2006. 1 .Seconded by Member Richardson and carried by a unanimous voice vote. ~ 3. Public Participation. None. 4. Old Business. . A. Recreation Program Manager's Report. Ms. Meli reported the movie at Senior Matinee last month. was well attended. She discussed Bluegrass and stated there w~?s only one musician that showed up last month. She stated there was a big Blue};rass event in Christmas. She has contacted the Bluegrass players and anticipates a good number of musicians at Bluegrass in two weeks. Member Gavoni suggested placing fliers in local music stores. Ms. Meli said they were working on Summer Camp. She stated they were offering a discount for prepaying. Registration started this week for City residents. She reported the field trips have been planned and Longwood would be partnering with Casselberry and Winter Springs. They will be sharing buses for some of the field trips for middle school age children. She said the Summer Camp Director was returning this year and Chris Capizzi would also be very involved with Summer Camp. Summer Camp will be held from June Stn to July 21St, for seven weeks, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. P&R 4-4-2:006/ 1 Ms. Meli reported the Easter bags were completed. She thanked the Board members for offering to help. She reviewed the plans and .games scheduled for the Easter Egg Hunt. She said there would be six golden eggs for each age group. She requested the volunteers come at 8:30 a.m. to set up. Ms. Meli said they were looking into offering skills camps next summer. She stated Mr. Capizzi recently attended a nneeting on "Hook a Kid on Golfl' and they would like to introduce golf. She said t}iey would like to encourage children to learn life long sports. Chair Shoemaker inquired if scholarships were going to be considered for next year's Summer Camp. Ms. Meli said she had checked with other cities to see what they did. She advised Casselberry offered reduced rates based on the free lunch program. at school. She stated she liked the concept of offering reduced rates and being able to help more families. She said at this time they were- getting a better idea of how to administer this type of program. Ms. Meli reported Rock the Park would) be held on May 23, 2006. She advised Longwood has been forwarded the opportunity to hold another skate demonstration by the Skatewave Company. She said this would provide the opportunity for the children to skate. They will have a DJ and it will be held at Reiter Park on the tennis courts. She said the Skatewave Company would be inviting other City Officials and Recreation Departments from the area to come to a class in the afternoon on Operating a ~~kate Park in Your City. The class will be held in the Community Building. Member Gavoni suggested moving the concessions closer to the tennis courts. Ms. Meli said National Night Out would be held on the :first Tuesday in August at Candyland Park. She stated there would not be a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting in August, but they would be asking the members to participate in National Night Out. She advised July 4,, 2006 was on the first Tuesday, therefore, there would not be a meeting in July. Discussion was held regarding Summer Camp Counselors remaining on the payroll through National Night Out. Chair Shoemaker said she read the City Commission minutes where it was mentioned the Parks and Recreation Board hold a fundraiser.. IVIs. Meli advised she spoke to Mr. Dra~;o today and he and Mr. Spinella were working on a letter to be sent to busine~;ses for donations toward the fountain P&R 4-4-2.006/2 around the 9/11 Memorial.. She said, once the letter goes out, perhaps the Board ~ members could promote donations. Mayor Butch Bundy, 721 Eagle Avenue-, said Deputy Mayor Anderson had received a letter from a resident inquiring when the Memorial would be completed. He said when the proposal for a fountain was made to the Commission last year they were not willing to spend the additional funds at that time on a fountain. He stated, after the fact, it was explained this was a reflecting pond with aerators to circulate the water. He said it had been suggested donations be solicited and perhaps hold a fundraiser. He stated he was against holding a fundraiser for this project. Chair Shoemaker said the Board could raise funds for other areas, such as scholarships. Member Richardson said Chesapeake, `lirginia has a Monument. She said they did not have any kind of water, but they had bricks in front of the Monument and people have purchased bronze plaques to go on the front of the bricks. She suggested firefighters, policemen, and veterans would purchase plaques and this would help pay for some of the water feature. Mayor Bundy said they needed to approach the fire and :police unions and VFW's . to get them involved. Chair Shoemaker inquired if the booklet, Mr. Miller had discussed previously, was available. Ms. Meli advised this was a sponsorship folder to be distributed to businesses and it has not been completed. Member Gavoni suggested having an energy drink company present to hand out drinks at Rock the Park. Chair Shoemaker inquired if people were applying. to serve on the boards. Mayor Bundy advised he has had two people back out. He had a person to appoint and at the last minute her husband's job was relocated so they were moving. Ms. Meli reported there was a car show being held on April 15th from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the City parking lot. She also advised there would be another AAEZP Driving Class offered next week on Monday and Tuesday in the Community Building. 5. New Business. None. P&R 4-4-2.006/3 6. Adjournment.
