PR11-14-06Min MINUTES PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD 175 WEST WARF:EN AVENUE LONGWOOD, FLORIDA November ]l4, '2006 COMMISSION CHAMBERS 7:00 PM Present: Abigail Shoemaker, Chair (aririved at 7:05 p.m.) Bob Driver, Vice Chair Gino Gavoni, Member James Hunter, Member Elsie Richardson, Member Tammy Uliano, Member Kitty White, Member Fran Meli, Recreation Program Manager Chris Capizzi, Recreation Program Coordinator Linda Goft', Recording Secretary 1. Call to Order. Vice Chair Driver called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. ~ 2. Approval of Minutes October .3, 2006 Regular Meeting. Member White moved to appro~~e the minutes as presented. Seconded by Member Richardson and carried. by a unanimous voice vote with Chair Shoemaker absent. 3. Publie Participation. None. 4. Old Business. A. Recreation Program.Manager~'s Report. Ms. Meli reported Halloween went very well. She said Booville was great and the carnival went very well this year. She advised the dunk tank brought in $130. She affirmed there would be some changes :made to the Haunted House next year to make it safer and bring it up to Code. She stated she would sum up Halloween. at the next meeting. She affirmed the use of bubbles in Booville rather than fog was much better. She reported the golf clinic, the soccer program, and tennis were going well. She said the Senior Matinee movie for tomorrow was Memphis Bell. Chair Shoemaker arrived at 7:05 p.m. Chair Shoemaker suggested, with chanl;es being required to make the Haunted House and Booville safer, consideration be given for each board member to paint a wall in the Booville rooms, rather than placing felt on the walls. Ms. Meli said she and Mr. Capizzi would be meeting with the Building Official and Fire Marshal concerning fire retarda~it materials for Booville. Member Hunt said to get the measurements to him for Booville and he would do a CADD drawing. Ms. Meli reported Bluegrass was a big hit last month. She reported watercolor art. on Historic Longwood was on display. She said Bluegrass would beheld this weekend with the Arts and Crafts Festiv~d. She stated this would provide for an opportunity for people attending, the Festival to attend. 5. New Business. Ms. Meli said Celebrate the Season would be held December 2°d starting at 4:00 p.m. The Girl Scouts will be helping with crafts. She reviewed the schedule of performers. She advised there would be a raffle with various gifts. Ms. Meli said they were going to hold a :movie in Candyland Park on December 15t" which is the last day of school. The :Feature will be How the Grnch Stole Christmas. In the case of rain, the movie will be moved to the Community Building. She said they will be sending fliers out in the water bill and Officer Herb Stewartson will take fliers to the Homeowner Association meetings. Ms. Meli reported Santa Visits Longwood this year on the west side of the tracks on December 9`" and on the east side of the tracks on December l Ot". Santa will be throwing candy and dog biscuits. Member Gavoni suggested placing a note on the candy canes about the movie. Member Uliano said she would try to have fliers distributed at Longwood Elementary School. Ms. Meli said they would like to show a movie on a regular basis in the park. She advised Babe Ruth would be running the concession stand for this movie. Ms. Meli reminded the Board that the next meeting. would be held on February 6. 2007. Member White inquired if there was any information regarding holding a farmers market. Ms.1Vleli advised there was nothing to report at this time. She stated, she did want to work on this and requested the board members to be thinking of suggestions. Member Uliano inquired if there were any plans for a dog park. P&R 11-14-06/2 ~ Member White advised Winter Springs h.ad a dog park. She inquired if there was any news regarding trails. Ms. Meli advised the referendum. failed. She said they would be competing with other counties for funding, but they were now being considered a legitimate project. She said the County was looking; at sidewalk. funds for the widening of sidewalks. She stated there may still be money. available for Longwood. She said Mr. Drago committed to this project and at a minimum was putting. in wider sidewalks. Member Richardson questioned the referendum table located at the Fall Festival. Ms. Meli advised it was allowed because Longwood endorsed the referendum and would have benefited from it passing. Member Richardson said people saw it a;~ political and it should not have been allowed. 6. Adjournment.
