PR03-06-07Min MINUTES ~ PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD 175 WEST WARF:EN AVENUE LONGWOOD, FLORIDA March 6, 2007 COMMISSION CHAMBERS 7:00 PM Present: Abigail Shoemaker, Chair Bob Driver, Vice Chair James Hunter, Member Stephanie Manor, Member Fran Meli, Recreation Prograim Manager Linda Goff, Recording Secretary Absent: Elsie Richardson, Member Tammy Uliano, Member Kitty White, Member 1. Call to Order. Chair Shoemaker called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes Februar3~ 6, 2007 Regular Meeting. Ms. Meli said she was not present at the; February meeting due to illness. She questioned whether it should be reflected in the minutes as an absence. Chair Shoemaker asked the Recording Secretary to check on this matter. Member Hunter moved to approve the Minutes of February 6, 2007 as presented pending the Recording; Secretary checking whether Ms. Meli should be reflected as being absent. Seconded by Vice Chair Driver and carried by a unanimous voice vote. 3. Public Participation. None. Chair Shoemaker welcomed new board member Stephanie Manor. She recognized David Putz as a new board appointee, .and said he would officially be welcomed at the next meeting. She announced this would have been Kitty White's last meeting. 4. Old Business. A. Recreation Manager's Report,. Ms. Meli reported the Movie in the Parlc was held on February 16th at Candyland Park and they had over 100 people in attendance. She .said everyone seemed to P&R 3-6-~~7/1 enjoy the movie, in spite of the cold we~rther. She said they would not be having any additional movies until going back to the regular time. They will start again in the fall. They plan to show a movie eve~.y other month through the Eastern Standard regular time period. Ms. Meli reported co-ed softball was underway and held every Friday night. There are six (6) teams participating at Candyland Park from 6:3.0 to 9:30 p.m. She said the Tennis Clinics were growing. The tennis pro has hired someone to help with the clinics. They are hoping to be able to hold some summer tennis camps. '.She said Futsal was growing. She reported golf was going great and they hope to add an adult golf program. She ;paid Mr. Capizzi has pulled together all of the cities in Seminole County for a youth golf league starting in May. It will take place at five different golf courses. The children will receive lessons as well as have play time on the golf course. She advised the City would continue the Golf Clinic as long as there was an interest. ~~he reported Blue Grass would be held March 17th. Senior Matinee is always he;Id the third Wednesday of the month from 11:00 a. m. to 1.:00 p.m. She said the City provides drinks and popcorn. She stated they may look at possibly changi~ig the time to earlier in the day so the assisted and independent living facilitie:~ can attend and return in time for their lunch. Ms. Meli reported upcoming events included Spring Break Camp, Easter Egg Hunt, and Rock the Park. She said Sprir?g Break Camp starts next Monday with 25 children enrolled. This will be for elementary children only. They will be going on field. trips to Blizzard Beach, skating, and the movies. She reported the Easter Egg Hunt will be held on March 31~` from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Candyland Park. She reviewed the plans for the event and said they would need volunteers. She reported there would be another eve;ning AARP Driving Course starting in April. Ms. Meli reported Rock the Park will be; held at Candyland Park this year. She said after this year the event would be at Reiter Park. She asked the Board Members to be thinking of ideas for this, event. She said they would discuss it further at the next meeting. Ms. Meli reported Summer Camp registration will begin April 3`~ and are being held the first week for residents only. They will be taking 50 elementary children and 30 middle school children. Ms. Meli reported they were applying for a tree grant. She said the entrance for Reiter Park was being redesigned to line; up with Church Avenue. Following this redesign, it will be ready to go out to bid. She reported Smallworld Park bids were due the end of next week. Smallworld Park will have all new playground equipment. She gave an update on the other City parks. P&R 3-6-(17/2 Chair Shoemaker said Member Uliano lead inquired about fishing areas within the ~ City. Ms. Meli said they would be looking into potential areas. Chair Shoemaker inquired if there was zm update on the swimming pool at Lyman High School. Ms. Meli advised Commissioner Sackett has been working on this and was very optimistic. She said there were some potential private investors. She stated Chairman Henley has committed to pre~:enting this project to the County. She advised Altamonte Springs has made a c:ommitment to contribute some funding toward the project. She said they were looking at the pool project and the field and track renovations being funded together. 5. New Business. None. .t 6. Adjournment.
