Call to Order. Chair Shoemaker calleal the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. 2. Election of Officers. A. Election of Chair. Member Putz moved to elect Abigail Shoemaker as Chair. Seconded by Member Olvey and carried by a unanimous roll call vote with Vice Chair Driver, and Members P?Ianor and LJliano absent. B. Election of Vice Chair. Member Olvey moved to ele~;t Bob Driver as Vice Chair. Seconded by Chair Shoemaker and carried 6y a unanimous roll call vote with Vice Chair Driver, and Members Manor and iJliano absent. 3. Approval of Minutes November 6, 2007 Regular Meeting. Chair Shoemaker moved to approve the minutes as presented. Seconded by Member Putz and carried by a unanimous voice vote with Vice Chair Driver, and- Members Manor and Uliano absent. 4. Public Participation. None. 5. Old Business. A. Recreation Manager's Report. P&R 02-05a)8/1 Ms. Meli reported that Mr. Capizzi has a few new sports that will be starting, one ~ being a Basketball Clinic for youth. They have added a lot of new senior programs. She said they have been working on the Parks and Recreation portion of the City's website trying to make it snore user friendly. She suggested the Board members visit the website. She reported they are working on developing a newsletter that will be inserted in the water bills. She advised the Tennis Clinks have expanded to include adults. Ms. Meli reported a new senior program is being held the third Monday of every month. The first month was a luncheon and the program. was on Diabetes. This month the program will be on Heart Health. She said the programs run from 11:00 a. m. to 1:00 p.m. At times, they will include lunch and some programs will be on a "drop-in" basis. She stated they were ;also starting to hold events in the early afternoon on the third Saturday of the rr~onth. These events will be of interest for all different ages. In June, the event will be on Kids Fitness. She advised this will take the place of Rock the Park for this ;year. She said that Rock the Park has not become what they wanted. However, they will continue to work on it. Chair Shoemaker said she saw on the website or in the water bill that they were looking for people to volunteer their time. Ms. Meli said they were looking for more entertainment venues. She stated, when Reiter Park was completed they would like to hold something monthly in the park ~ with various types of music. Ms. Meli reported that Easter was the nE:xt event. It will be held on March 15`x' at Candyland Park. The event will begin. at: 9:00 a.m. and the first Easter Egg Hurrt is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. This year., they purchased eggs that have something inside and the children will keep the eggs. She stated there would be three to four golden eggs for each age group. They will also have inflatables, games, face painting, pony rides and .crafts. She afI•irmed they have been working on sponsorships and two businesses are sponsoring the Easter event. Ms. Meli reported they were beginning to work on Celebrate the Seasons now. She explained that Celebrate the Season:> will be split this year. There will be a small parade starting at Longwood Elementary and ending at Candyland Park. They will have Santa, games .and crafts <<t Candyland Park early in the afternoon. The Tree Lighting and caroling will be held in the evening at City Hall. She said they were also looking into having carri~~ge rides during the evening. She stated the evening event for Celebrate the Seas~~ns will be different and more upscale. It will be geared toward families. She said they would probably be using the Community Building that evening. Chair Shoemaker declared that Ms. Kelp/ was doing a great job with the work she was doing for Parks and Recreation. PBiR 02-05-08/2 Ms. Meli reported that Halloween was :still up in air as to whether they will be able to have this event. She said at a minimum, they would have a one night ~ children's event. Chair .Shoemaker suggested a tent with no sides for Booville with a maze constructed out of hay. Ms. Meli advised they cannot use a tent. She said they have three inflatable castles they would use for Booville. ShE; stated they would be looking into vareous options and she would keep the Board informed. Member Rice said she had not been to t:he Halloween festivities for several years. She has attended the Christmas event and National Night Out. She stated she was involved with the Neighborhood Watch. Ms. Meld said National Night Out would be on August 5tli this year. It will be held at Candyland Park. Ms. Meli reported there would be a Spring Fling Dance in May held in conjunction with Chambrel. It will be a free event and will be the same type of event as the Harvest Moon Ball. She said they planned to hold this type of event quarterly. Chair Shoemaker inquired if a calendar had been done. Ms. Meli said the calendar on the City's website was up to date. She stated the next flier to go out in the utility bill was on the Easter event. Chair Shoemaker suggested they not lose track of surveying teens. Ms. Meli said when the skate park and t'he basketball courts were built at Reiter Park; this would draw a certain number ~of teens. Ms. Meli said the January Movie in the ]Park had terrible weather. The last Movie in the Park will be held on February ISth. She said they will start again in the fall of the year with the time change. She reported that all information regarding Summer Camp will be out in March. She said there were resident and non- resident fees for Summer Camp. They will hold early registration again this year and there will be a price break provided on payments made prior to camp beginning. She stated they would have some counselors returning. Member Olvey said Columbus Harbor was also holding an Easter event the same day as the City's. Member Rice inquired if the City had ever held some type of event for July 4th P&R 02-05.08/3 Ms. Meli said they have talked about holding an old fashioned 4~' of July during the daytime. However, nothing has mate>rialized. She stated the City would not: have fireworks. Chair Shoemaker said it would be nice if they could hold something like the 1:?5`" Anniversary for July 4`h. Ms. Meli said Reiter Park will be finish~;d next summer and this could be a good event to hold. Ms. Meli reported there would be a car >how held on April 5~' from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the grass parking lot in front of the Hotel. This is not being put on by the City; they are only providing the space. She said these will be micro cars that came about after the war. She stated the car show the Police Department holds will be on the third Saturday in April. Ms. Meli advised they were in the process of selecting a contractor for the :Reiter Park project. They had six (6) bids submitted, and. they will be interviewing each contractor individually. She said they hope, to have a contract before the Commission in March. Ms. Meli said she has been told that Sm;~llworld Park was being well utilized. Member Putz inquired who was in charge of the current equipment in Reiter Park. He said the swing set was in very bad condition. ~ - Ms. Meli said she would make Property Maintenance aware of this matter. 6. New Business. Member Putz said Lake Mary recently opened awet/dry park that he visited. He stated it was very well planned, and the ?ark had community involvement and corporate sponsorships supporting the park. Ms. Meli said Lake Mary has an organization made up of local citizens and businesses that have the ability to raise funds that can be expended without going through the General Fund. Ms. Meli reported they were working with Lyman High School and the Seminole County Commissioners to build a community pool. She said they need a pool in which the high school can use competiti~zely. They also need a shallow component to the pool for the community. She stated they have discovered that they could build two pools to serve these: purposes for less money. They hope to have one pool that will be a competitive 50 meter pool that could be used for swim lessons, scuba classes, water aerobics, and synchronized swimming. The second pool will be a zero depth pool that would be handicap accessible. It would P&R 02-OS-08/4 have play features and a lap swimming ;area. The School will provide the property for the pool. She said the pool would be situated so to be available to the community during school hours. She afl=itmed this project will require corporate sponsorships. 7. Adjournment.
