P&R03-04-08Min MINUTES ~ PARKS AND RECREATION ADVISOR' BOARD 175 WEST WARREN AVENUE LONGWOOD, .FLORIDA March 4, :2008 COMMISSION CHAMBERS 7.:00 PM Present: Abigail Shoemaker, Chair Bob Driver, Vice Chair Van Olvey, Member David Putz, Member Lori Rice, Member Chris Capizzi, Recreation Program Coordinator Linda Goff, Recording Secretary Absent: Stephanie Manor, Member Tammy Uliano, Member 1. Call to Order. Chair Shoemaker called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. 2. Approval of Minutes February 5, 2008 Regular Meeting. Vice Chair Driver moved to approve the minutes as submitted. Seconded by Member Putz -and carried by a unanimous voice vote with Members Manor and Uliano absent. Chair Shoemaker said the minutes did n~~t reflect that she introduced Member Lori Rice. 3. Public Participation. None. 4. Old Business. A. Recreation Manager's Report. Mr. Capizzi reported the City was in the process of choosing a General Contractor for Reiter Park and construction should begin soon. He said the Easter event will be held March 15~' from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Candyland Park. He said some local Churches have donated the bounce house and an obstacle course. He stated they can always use volunteers. 'The Egg Hur.~t starts at 9:30 a. m. He said the February Movie in the Park was a huge success with over 100 people in attendance. He advised the Movie in the Park is held thE; months of December, January, and February, . P&R 3-4-18/1 Mr. Capizzi advised they have incorporaited a few new programs. Yoga will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. starting on April 21 The Yoga classes will be at a cost. of $8 a class. Basketball Clinics will be starting at Smallworld Park on Saturday, April 19'" from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at a fee of $45 for five sessions. The Varsity Coach of Hagerty High School is conducting the clinics for age groups of ]l2 and under, and 13 and up. He stated Tennis classes were ongoing. Mr. Capizzi reported there is a Spring Fling Dance scheduled on May 28~' for 55 years and older. He said the last event of this type was very successful and they will be partnering with Chambrel. Mr. Capizzi advised that the Easter evens: has been fully funded by sponsorships. Marveen Kelly has been working on sponsorships and this has been very successful. He stated Ms. Kelly has beer? working on the Hi~hway to Health Series_ There is a Nutrition Seminar scheduled for March 17t and on April 21~` the program is on Cancer Awareness. H~~ advised that this month's feature movie is ":Michael Clayton" for the Senior Matinee. AARP Driver Safety Program classes are scheduled for March 24~' and 26a', 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. He reported that on Saturday, March 15~', Innovative Pharmacy Services is presenting "Need Answers" from 11:00 - 2:00 p.m. There will be a "Child Care Presentation" on Saturday April 19'h from 10:00 - 2:00 p.nn. These take place at the Community Building. Mr. Capizzi reported that all of the field trips have been planned for Summer Camp and the buses were scheduled. He said Stephanie Manor was going to be the Camp Director and she will be resigning from the Board due to a conflict of interest. Member Rice inquired if the registration .form was available online. Mr. Capizzi advised it will be placed online by the end of this week He said they will also have the ability to accept payments by credit card this year. Member Rice inquired if they would be posting the field trip schedule on the City's website. Mr. Capizzi said that was a possibility and he would look. into the matter. Chair Shoemaker suggested there may b~~ a safety issue with the schedule being online. Member Rice inquired what the capacity was for Summer Camp. P&R 3-4-08/2 Mr. Capizzi advised the capacity was 80 children. He said the sign up for residents begins April 1 and the Early Bird non-resident sign ups begin April The regular registration fees go into effect June 2°d Member Rice asked if $10 held a spot in the program. Mr. Capizzi responded in the affirmative. Member Putz asked what were the age groups for Summer Camp. Mr. Capizzi said it was for kindergarten through eighth grade. Member Olvey said his children liked Longwood's camp better than any they have attended. Mr. Capizzi reviewed the various activities and. said having the right counselors make the camp a success.. Member Putz said he had mentioned the Splash Park in Lake Mary at the last meeting. He wanted to let the Members know that they were going to start charging a fee for the park. 5. New Business.
