1. Ms. Volkening called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M.
Ms. Nancy Harris was introduced and welcomed by the members.
Ms. Harris is a newly appointed member to the
Parks/Recreation Board and represents District 5.
2. Motion by Ms. Krist/Seconded by Mr. Ulmer to approve the
March 5, 1941 minutes as submitted. Motion carried by an
unanimous voice vote.
3. Ms. Volkening had spoken with Lieutenant Yelvington and he
assured her that the Police Dept. will work with the board
for assistance for the July 4th Bike Ride. She is also
checking into having a few volunteers with station wagons in
case a biker needs assistance. Ms. Krist will measure the
distance of the bike ride by the next meeting. Ms.
Volkening left a phone message with the VFW for the
headmaster to call about the barbecue, she has not received
a return call. Mr. Warren also stopped by and the
headmaster was not in, he also left his name and number but
hasn't received a call. Mr. Warren will also report back to
the board concerning the radio stations participation.
Ms. Volkening addressed the Commission at last nights
meeting during the review of the Recreation and Open Space
Element of the Comprehensive Plan. She informed the
Commission that the Parks/Recreation Board supports
inquiring into the purchase of the Island Lake property for
future park land. Mr. Terry will research the cost. She
also spoke of the need for a more adequate community
building.

Center provides, the Center has assisted in the recovery of
over 600 children since 1984. They would like to have an
information booth at Candyland during the Car Show. Members
inquired if the Center would consider also having game
booths. Mr. Harrelson said he would check with the director
and inform the board. The members had a general discussion
on donating the entry fee from the Car Show and the
possibility of any other monies collected other than the
barbecue (which would depend on that organization), to the
Missing Children Center.
Ms. Krist made a motion that any proceeds collected from the
July 4th Bike Ride and Car Show would be donated to the
Missing Children Center, seconded by Mr. Ulmer. Motion
passed unanimously by a voice vote.
The board continued with more discussion of the July 4th
festivities. Mr. Warren expects 75-100 participants for the
Car Show. Mr. Warren suggested that instead of trophies for
the participants door prizes could be awarded. Ms.
Volkening suggested having participation ribbons for all
entries. Ms. Krist offered to check on the cost of the
ribbons and report back by the next meeting. Mr. Warren
also suggested that the voting for category winners for the
car show could be done by selling tickets for a minimal
amount. This would generate funds and everyone could cast a
vote that bought the tickets. Members were not sure if
people would be receptive to the idea of buying tickets to
vote.
Mr. Harrelson thanked the board for their support and
excused himself.
5. Mr. Tom Smith, a Public Works employee, suggested to Ms.
Volkening that Candyland have a plant sculpture of a
baseball. Mr. Smith will find out what type of plants are
used and Ms. Volkening will check with Lucas Nursery about
donating the plants. Ms. Volkening would like the board to
start some type of beautification program in the future.
Ms. Krist recommended, and members agreed, that Ms. Neisler
re°do the introduction/donation letter to show sponsorship
of the Missing Children Center. This may help in members
requesting donations since it is for a community service
organization.
Members requested that Ms. Neisler contact Mr. Terry about
including an article in the City Scene about the leash law
for pets and also a reminder to the citizens that pets are
not allowed in any city park.
