PR 04-09-91 MinPARK5/RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD APRIL 9,1991 PRESENT: MARY VOLKENING-CHAIRMAN NANCY HARRIS LISA KRiST VINCE WARREN-EXCUSED AT APPOX. 7:30 P.M. JAMES ULMER ABSENT: CURT FEYERHERM-EXGU5ED GARY PARKER-EXGU5ED HILL GOEHEL,DIR. OF PARK5 ~ REG.-EXCUSED GUEST: 5TEVE HARREL50N 1. Ms. Volkening called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M. Ms. Nancy Harris was introduced and welcomed by the members. Ms. Harris is a newly appointed member to the Parks/Recreation Board and represents District 5. 2. Motion by Ms. Krist/Seconded by Mr. Ulmer to approve the March 5, 1941 minutes as submitted. Motion carried by an unanimous voice vote. 3. Ms. Volkening had spoken with Lieutenant Yelvington and he assured her that the Police Dept. will work with the board for assistance for the July 4th Bike Ride. She is also checking into having a few volunteers with station wagons in case a biker needs assistance. Ms. Krist will measure the distance of the bike ride by the next meeting. Ms. Volkening left a phone message with the VFW for the headmaster to call about the barbecue, she has not received a return call. Mr. Warren also stopped by and the headmaster was not in, he also left his name and number but hasn't received a call. Mr. Warren will also report back to the board concerning the radio stations participation. Ms. Volkening addressed the Commission at last nights meeting during the review of the Recreation and Open Space Element of the Comprehensive Plan. She informed the Commission that the Parks/Recreation Board supports inquiring into the purchase of the Island Lake property for future park land. Mr. Terry will research the cost. She also spoke of the need for a more adequate community building. 4. Mr. Warren introduced Mr. Steve Harrelson who he had invited to address the board concerning the sponsorship of the Missing Children Center for the July 4th Hike Ride and Car Show. Mr. Harrelson informed the board of the service the APRIL 9, 1991 P/R MINUTES PAGE TWO Center provides, the Center has assisted in the recovery of over 600 children since 1984. They would like to have an information booth at Candyland during the Car Show. Members inquired if the Center would consider also having game booths. Mr. Harrelson said he would check with the director and inform the board. The members had a general discussion on donating the entry fee from the Car Show and the possibility of any other monies collected other than the barbecue (which would depend on that organization), to the Missing Children Center. Ms. Krist made a motion that any proceeds collected from the July 4th Bike Ride and Car Show would be donated to the Missing Children Center, seconded by Mr. Ulmer. Motion passed unanimously by a voice vote. The board continued with more discussion of the July 4th festivities. Mr. Warren expects 75-100 participants for the Car Show. Mr. Warren suggested that instead of trophies for the participants door prizes could be awarded. Ms. Volkening suggested having participation ribbons for all entries. Ms. Krist offered to check on the cost of the ribbons and report back by the next meeting. Mr. Warren also suggested that the voting for category winners for the car show could be done by selling tickets for a minimal amount. This would generate funds and everyone could cast a vote that bought the tickets. Members were not sure if people would be receptive to the idea of buying tickets to vote. Mr. Harrelson thanked the board for their support and excused himself. 5. Mr. Tom Smith, a Public Works employee, suggested to Ms. Volkening that Candyland have a plant sculpture of a baseball. Mr. Smith will find out what type of plants are used and Ms. Volkening will check with Lucas Nursery about donating the plants. Ms. Volkening would like the board to start some type of beautification program in the future. Ms. Krist recommended, and members agreed, that Ms. Neisler re°do the introduction/donation letter to show sponsorship of the Missing Children Center. This may help in members requesting donations since it is for a community service organization. Members requested that Ms. Neisler contact Mr. Terry about including an article in the City Scene about the leash law for pets and also a reminder to the citizens that pets are not allowed in any city park. APRIL 9, 1991 P/R MINUTES PAGE THREE Mr. Ulmer informed the board that unfortunately he must resign his position on the board. He will be moving from the City shortly and expressed his thanks and enjoyment for the time he had served. 6. Motion to adjourn by Ms. Krist/Seconded by Mr. Ulmer. The meeting adjourned at 8:05.
