tHs. Volkening called the meeting to or-der at 7:02 P.M.
Ms. Volkening welcomed new Board member-, Valerie Gohlke and new
Acting Parks and Recreation Director, Steve Palumbo.
ELECTION OF NEW BOARD OFFICERS
Ms. Volkening asked for any nominations for Chairpet-son. Motion
by Nis. i<rist, seconded by Nir. Barkan that Nlary Volkening continue
as Chairwoman. No fut-ther nominations were made. Motion carried
by an unanimous voice vote. Ms. Volkening accepted the position.
Ms. Krist made the motion, seconded by Mr. Bar-kan that Nancy
Harris serve as Ca-Chairman. No further nominations were made.
Motion carried by an unanimous voice cote. Ms. Harris accepted
the position.
APPROVAL OF i~IINIJTES
Motion by Ms. Krist to approve September- 3, 1991 minutes,
seconded by Ms. Harris.
Pl.lBL I C PARTICIPATION
Ms. Lynda. Kane frorrr the Shadow Hills Homeowt-rers Association
attended the meeting due to a letter- she received from Mr.
Palumbo. Mr. Palumbo explained that Mr. Goebel had received a
letter from Nis. Kane asking for some repairs to Shadow Hills
Park. Ms. Kane further- explained that a lot of new people have
moved into the subdivision, and that they .want to fix up the
park. The park needs some attention to the grass, ant hills and
the slide. She also stated that the merry-go-around is broken.
Mr-. Palumbo advised that he has been to the park and that he is
aware of the needs and has scheduled the work to be done. Ms.
Volkening explained that the Parks and Recreation Department is
shor-t on personnel. Ms. Kane stated that their homeot^mers
association i-ras scheduled a picnic for October 19th. She would
like to have as much done as possible by that date. Ms.
Volkening advised i`1s. Kane to contact the different people within
the subdivision to come to the Parks and Recreation meetings.

The input from the subdivision homeowners helps the Board members
to determine what the homeowners want and/ar need for their park.
Mr. Palumbo advised that he had found a pile o-F picnic table
parts. He stated that he would combined together and would
possibly end up with a half dozen picnic tables. He suggested he
could put one in Shadow Hi11s Park. Ms. Krist reminded him that
the tables should be chained down due to theft.
Ms. Kane questioned if there was any possibilities or plans for a
Senior Citizen Center. Mr. Palumbo advised that if the Longwood
Hotel can be purchased as the City Ha11, that the current City
Nall could be used for all kind of things, including Senior
Citizen activities.

Palumbo agreed with Nir. Miles concerns. Ms. Harris questioned
Mr. Palumbo as to if he has considered contacting the elementary
schools in the area for student aide in maintaining the parks.
DIRECTDR`S REPORT
Mr. Palumbo advised that he was mostly putting out fires at the
time of the meeting. He did state that he was trying to purchase
another mower, as the one that the City has row continually needs
repair.
Mr. Palumbo stated that there Uai11 be (VO winter softball league
this year, due to the condition of the fields. However, he hopes
to expand on the softball program. He suggested possibly a
woman's league.
OLD BuszNESS
1"Is. Volke,-ring asked Ms. Jackson if she researched to determine
the date the City was founded. xis. Jackson advised that on the
date of May 19, 1876 the City was actually named LONGIrJOOD. On
that date the Longwood Past Office was established. Before a
post office could be established, there must be a City. Until
that time this location was known as Myrtle Lake.

time of the meeting. Mr. Palumbo advised that it was started but
due to the r-ain, the park was still under water in places. f`1r.
Palumbo stated that he plans to speak with the City Engineer
regarding a long terra answer to this flooding problem in Reider
Park.
At `7:55 P.h`1., Ms. Kr-ist excused herself from the meeting.
Mr. Lancaster advised ivir. Palumbo that he had a new lawn mower
that he would be willing to donate to the City. f~lr. Palumbo
stated he would have someone pick it up the next day.

Mr. Palumbo stated that as a City resident, he was unhappy with
the Summer Program. He stated that he did not like the idea that
after paying money for registration to the program, that
additional money was required if the children want to attend some
of the bigger field trips. Furtt-rermore, if the parents can NOT
afford to pay the additional money, the parents then have to find
other means for child care that day. Mr. Palumbo advised that he
would rather have more recreation and less travel. Mr. Palumbo
stated that he r~~ould like some input on this topic.
Nlotion was made to adjourn the meeting by rls. Harris, seconded by
Mr. Barkan.
