AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF LONGWOOD, FLORIDA, AMENDING THE
LONGWOOD CITY CODE OF ORDINANCES, CHAPTER 14 SECTION 14 -5
ENTITLED "PROHIBITED ANIMALS "; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS,
CODIFICATION, SEVERABILITY AND EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Longwood is vested with horn, e rule authority pursuant to
Article VII, Section 2 of the Constitution of the State of Florida and Chapter 166, Florida
Statutes, to enact ordinances;
WHEREAS, the City of Longwood desires to clarify the number of all a'.lowable
animals permitted to be kept on a parcel;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF LONGWOOD, FLORIDA:
Section 1. Longwood City Code Chapter 14 Section 14 -5 be amended as follows:
Sec. 14 -5. - Prohibited animals.
(a) Specific animals. It shall be unlawful to keep, maintain or raise in the city the following
animals:
(1) Cows, all species; sheep, all species; goats, all species; all other hoofed animals
and livestock.
(2) Animals, such as, but not limited to chickens, roosters, turkeys, peacocks, geese
and ducks, other poultry.
(3) Any dangerous animal or reptile.
(4) Venomous reptiles.
(5) Public nuisance animals.
(b) Exceptions: Subsection (a) of this section is not intended to apply and it is an exception
to those provisions regarding the keeping of prohibited animals if the prohibited animals
are trained guard animals or trained law enforcement animals and are maintained by a law
enforcement agency and used exclusively by the law enforcement agency in fulfilling its
duties.
(c) Number of dogs and ea animals It shall be unlawful to keep, maintain, hu sband,
or raise in the city more than a total of five de its animals, includin
dogs, cats, hamsters, gerbils. ferrets, mice, guinea pigs, nonvicious and nonvenomous

reptiles, parrots and other birds and - rabbits, on one parcel of land of one acre or
less.
(1) For parcels of land larger than one acre, the number of legs and/ cat animals
permitted shall increase by one animal for each one -fifth acre over one acre until
the parcel reaches two acres in size. Parcels of land6 two acres or greater shall be
permitted to have up to ten dogs an er cetsanimals, but no more than ten such

(2) This restriction of the number of does and eat- animals shall not apply if the

Section 2. Severability. If any section, subsection, sentence, clause, phrase, or
portion of this Ordinance, or application hereof, is for any reason held invalid or
unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, such portion or application shall
be deemed a separate, distinct, and independent provision of such holding shall not affect
the validity of the remaining portions thereof to the extent practicable.
Section 3. Conflicts and Repealer. To the extent this Ordinance, or any
provisions thereof, conflict with any previously enacted Ordinances of the City of
Longwood, Florida, this ordinance shall control only to th � extent any such conflict(s)
exists.
Section 4. Codification. Section 1 of this Ordinance shall be codified as a part of
the Code of Ordinances of the City of Longwood, Florida, such provisions may be renumbered
or re- lettered to accomplish such intention, and the word "Ordinance ", or similar words,
may be changed to "Section," "Article," or other appropriate word. The City Clerk is granted
liberal authority to codify the provisions of this Ordinance as contemplated herein.
Section S. Effective Date. This Ordinance shall take effect upon adoption.
