A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
LONGWOOD, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF
LONGWOOD STREET FROM PALMETTO AVENUE TO CHURCH_
AVENUE TO JOHN L. MICA WAY. _
WHEREAS, Congressman John L. Mica was first elected to the House of
Representatives in 1992 to represent Florida's 7th Congressional District which includes the city
of Longwood; and
WHEREAS, Congressman Mica served in the United States Congress until: 2017,
representing the State of Florida in a number of leadership roles including as the Chairman of the
Committee of Transportation and Infrastructure; and -
WHEREAS, Congressman Mica has been a constant champion for SunRail, leading the
way to acquire funding that made the project a reality; and
WHEREAS, SunRail has had a transformative effect on the region, particularly in
Longwood where the station anchors the City's Heritage Village and has promoted
unprecedented development in and around the Transit -Oriented Development (TOD) area; and
WHEREAS, the SunRail station is located on Longwood Street; and
WHEREAS, under the authority contained in Sections 336.05(1) and 336.05(2), Florida
Statutes, the Board of County Commissioners may name and rename streets and roads; and
WHEREAS, Longwood Street is wholly located within the City of Longwood; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Longwood desires to show its appreciation
to Congressman Mica for his service; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of the City of Longwood,
Florida, as follows:
Section I: The City Commission supports the name change of Longwood Street from Palmetto
Avenue to Church Avenue to John L. Mica Way., located in the record plat of the Plan of
Longwood, PB1/PG18.
Section H: Any resolutions or policies in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section III: This resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
