A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF LONGWOOD, FLORIDA, PROVIDING FOR AND
SUPPORTING THE DESIGNATION OF A PORTION OF STATE ROAD 434 BETWEEN
STATE ROAD 400 AND RONALD REAGAN BOULEVARD IN THE CITY OF
LONGWOOD, SEMINOLE COUNTY, AS THE "DEPUTY SHERIFF GEORGE PFEIL
MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF HOUSE BILL
NUMBER 389, WHICH WAS ENACTED DURING THE 2024 LEGISLATIVE SESSION;
PROVIDING FOR IMPLEMENTING ADMINISTRATIVE ACTIONS; AND PROVIDING
FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, under the authority contained in Sections 334.071, Florida Statutes, the City
Commission of the City of Longwood, Florida desires to express its support of a marker
placement for a particular honorary designation name; and
WHEREAS, if a transportation facility contained in an act of the Legislature is for
honorary or memorial purposes or to distinguish a particular facility, and unless specifically
provided for, will not be construed to require any action by a local government or private party
regarding the changing of any street signs, mailing address, or 911 emergency telephone
number system listing; and
WHEREAS, the effect of such designations shall only be construed to require the
placement of markers by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) at the termini or
intersections specified for each highway segment or bridge designated and as authority for
FDOT to place other markers as appropriate for the transportation facility being designated;
and
WHEREAS, the erection of markers is contingent on the appropriate city or county
commissions passing a resolution in support of the particular honorary designation and if the
bridge or road segment being designated is located in more than one city or county, resolutions

supporting the designation must be passed by each affected local government prior to the
erection of the markers; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Longwood has deemed it appropriate to
designate a memorial marker for the segment of roadway to be named as the "Deputy Sheriff
George Pfeil Memorial Highway" in the honor of Deputy Sheriff George Pfeil; and
WHEREAS, on July 29, 1977, Deputy Sheriff George Pfeil was tragically shot and killed
shortly after completing a special detail. In uniform, he entered Longwood Village Pharmacy to
fill a prescription, inadvertently interrupting an armed robbery in progress. The suspects
mortally wounded Deputy Pfeil. Deputy Pfeil, a former New York City police officer, had retired
to Florida and was serving as a reserve deputy sheriff for the agency; and
WHEREAS, during the 2024 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature enacted House
Bill Number 389, which designated a memorial marker for a segment of portion of State Road
434 between State Road 400 and Ronald Reagan Boulevard in the City of Longwood, Seminole
County to be named as the "Deputy Sheriff George Pfeil Memorial Highway" in the honor of
Deputy Sheriff George Pfeil; and
WHEREAS, the road segment is maintained by FDOT and is located within the
jurisdictional limits of Seminole County and the City of Longwood; and
WHEREAS, the adoption of this Resolution will not result in any address changes, street
name changes, street sign changes for the road segment and is in support of the particular
honorary designation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ADOPTED AND RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF LONGWOOD, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1. Designation of"Deputy Sheriff George Pfeil Memorial Highway".
The City Commission hereby support the designation of the portion of State Road 434 as
located within and depicted on the attached map, which is located between State Road 400 and
Ronald Reagan Boulevard in the City of Longwood, Seminole County, as the "DEPUTY SHERIFF
GEORGE PFEIL MEMORIAL HIGHWAY."
Section 2. Implementing Administrative Actions.
The City Manager is directed to take all necessary actions to implement the provisions
of this Resolution.
Section 3. Effective Date.
This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
Passed and adopted this 5th day of August, 2024.
